Worked plenty of dead end jobs through the 80's and 90's. I Finally went to college at St. Cloud State in late 90's and got a BS in Mass Communications from Minnesota State Mankato in 2003. I Moved to AZ in early 2004 as an excuse to leave Minnesota and without knowing a soul here. I got a job as a reporter for the Kingman Daily Miner and took part-time work as a GED instructor at the local community college. My boss at the college told me to apply to teach at a newly constructed prison just outside Kingman - I applied on a whim and got the job with a whopping 7 weeks teaching experience, and I've been there ever since. I still have the part-time gig at the college too. The facility houses about 1500 inmates. I teach Adult Basic Education - the 3 R's - and I can say I get out of prison 5 days a week - ha ha. The prison is run by a private company called Management & Training Corporation that contracts with the Arizona Department of Corrections. An additional 2000 bed facility is going up right next door, also to be managed by MTC, and I'm working on a promotion into administration. I started grad school at Northern Arizona University in January in preparation for my expected job change. My degree will be in public administration.
I live on my own little piece of the desert with my three dogs in an unincorporated area called Golden Valley, which is situated between Kingman to the east and Bullhead City to the west. It's big sky country and it's where I belong.
